Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about checking your status, disputes and turnaround for people going through a Bchex background check. Can’t find yours? Send us a question. Last updated October 2026.
How do I check the status of my background check?
Sign in to the Bchex Applicant Portal with the email address used for your background check order. The portal shows where your check stands. If you can’t find your order, send a question on this page and Applicant Support will reply within 24 business hours.
How do I dispute something on my Bchex background check?
Start a dispute online and tell us what you believe is wrong, with any documents that support it. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a consumer reporting agency generally has 30 days to reinvestigate a dispute.
Why is Bchex running a background check on me?
An employer, school, or volunteer organization asked Bchex to run your background check as part of its hiring or screening process. Employment background checks require your written permission under the FCRA, and the organization that ordered the check makes its own decision.
Why is my background check taking so long?
About 85% of eligible searches come back within 24 hours, and more than 70% within 6 hours. Searches that need a court clerk to pull records by hand, international checks, and employment or education verifications can take longer. The Applicant Portal shows which part of your check is still in progress.
Is Bchex a legitimate background check company?
Yes. Bchex, formerly Background Investigation Bureau (BIB), has run background checks since 1995 from Huntersville, North Carolina. It is PBSA-accredited and SOC 2 Type 2 certified. If you weren’t expecting a request, confirm it with the organization that asked you.
Can I get a copy of my background check report?
Yes. Under the FCRA you can ask a consumer reporting agency for your file, and an employer generally has to give you a copy before acting on it. Send a question on this page and choose "Something else" to request yours.
My employer says they didn’t get my results. What should I do?
Check your status in the Applicant Portal first. If it shows complete, ask the employer to look in their Bchex account. If you still need help, send a question on this page and choose "My employer or school says they didn’t get it."
