Best Background Screening Companies for 2026: Bchex vs. Checkr, HireRight, Sterling, and More — Compared by Industry

Honest 2026 comparison of the best background check companies for employers — Bchex vs Checkr, HireRight, Sterling, First Advantage and 20+ more, by industry.

A condensed view of the 2026 Honest Background Screening Comparison Industry Report. One rubric applied evenly to every vendor — including Bchex — across the ten industry categories that matter in 2026.

Why this comparison is different

Most "best background screening companies" articles in 2026 are reshuffling the same names from 2022. The problem: the ownership map has changed materially in the last two years, and each of those changes affects which vendor actually fits which buyer. First Advantage acquired Sterling Check (announced February 2024, closed October 31, 2024). Accurate Background acquired Orange Tree (June 2024). HireRight acquired ClearChecks (April 2025) to strengthen its backgroundchecks.com SMB platform. Checkr acquired GoodHire back in April 2022 — far enough back that the combined service model has settled.

The buying decision in 2026 has to start from the current ownership map, not the 2022 one. Where you land depends on what you're buying for: SMB self-serve, mid-market service, enterprise scale, regulated-industry compliance, volunteer credentialing, or platform-grade API. Different categories, different fits.

That reality isn't in most comparison articles, because most comparison articles aren't built to reflect it.

This guide is different in one specific way. It's published by Bchex — a PBSA-accredited screening company founded in 1995. We compete in this market, so we have a point of view and a conflict of interest. We handle it by applying the same rubric to ourselves that we apply to everyone else, and by naming the categories where we are not the right answer.

One of the ten industry categories we cover — Global / International Hiring — is a category where Bchex is Not Rated. In that section we describe who is built for that buyer and stop there. The full long-form treatment is in our 2026 Honest Background Screening Comparison Industry Report; this article is the ungated front door to it.

What "best" actually means in 2026

Most comparison articles rank on speed, accuracy, and compliance. Those matter, but they aren't differentiators anymore — every legitimate provider claims all three. The real decision criteria in 2026 look different.

PBSA accreditation as the baseline filter

The Professional Background Screeners Association independently audits member companies on data quality, compliance, and operational standards. If a vendor isn't accredited, the first question to ask is why. "We're working toward it" has been the answer for some vendors for years. Accreditation isn't a guarantee of quality, but it's a floor — and the floor matters in a market with real downside risk.

Turnaround distribution, not turnaround average

"12-hour average turnaround" is irrelevant if 30% of checks take four days. The distribution matters more than the mean. Ask any vendor for the percentile breakdown.

92%
of Bchex checks complete within 24 hours
99.99%
accuracy on completed checks
68+
NPS · 90%+ applicant satisfaction

Vendors who publish a distribution make the diligence question easy to answer.

Acquisition status as a 2026 buying input

Ownership changes in this industry have a measurable second-order effect on the customer experience during the 12–24 month post-close integration window. When you evaluate a vendor in 2026, ask who owns them today and what specifically is in the contract to address pricing and service continuity during integration. The Acquisition Map below covers the four ownership changes that matter for the 2026 buying landscape.

Applicant experience as employer brand

The experience your candidates have during screening reflects on the organization running it, not the vendor. Whether a vendor measures and publishes applicant satisfaction is one of the diligence questions in the report.

Industry fit over generic capability

A provider built for Fortune 500 global screening is structurally different from one built for mid-market domestic employers, which is structurally different from a self-serve SMB platform or a developer-first API. Pick a provider whose primary segment matches your org. The rubric below applies the same questions to every vendor.

Bchex
Mid-Market · K-12 · Youth-Serving · Volunteer · Local Gov · Staffing · Tech

Bchex SmallBiz is the dedicated self-serve product for under-50-employee small businesses — meaning Bchex covers nine of the ten categories in this report.

Published metrics: 92% of checks complete within 24 hours; 99.99% accuracy; NPS 68+; applicant satisfaction above 90%. Triple Guarantee: 24-hour turnaround, satisfaction guarantee with refund or make-it-right, and best-price match against any PBSA-accredited competitor.

Not Rated in: Global / International Hiring. We don't compete in that category and don't claim to.

Checkr
Tech-Forward · High-Volume Platforms

PBSA-accredited. API-first platform built for high-volume marketplace and gig-economy screening. Acquired GoodHire in April 2022; the combined service model has settled in the four years since close.

Built for: multinationals requiring 200+ country coverage, deep compliance infrastructure, and the scale to navigate government procurement.

Currently in the post-close window — first 12 to 24 months after October 31, 2024. The Acquisition Map section addresses what to ask during this period.

HireRight
Regulated Industries

PBSA-accredited. Established positions in DOT-regulated transportation, healthcare, and financial services, with global coverage. Acquired ClearChecks in April 2025 specifically to strengthen its backgroundchecks.com SMB platform — the ClearChecks deal targets the small-business segment, not regulated-industry mid-market.

Built for: enterprise nonprofits and multinationals with significant volunteer or contractor screening volume; chapter-based volunteer programs that benefit from cross-organization credentialing.

Verified First
Mid-Market · Service-First

PBSA-accredited. Compliance track record with under-30-second average support response time and 150+ HR/ATS integrations.

Built for: mid-market employers prioritizing service responsiveness and ATS-integration breadth.

The 2024–2025 Acquisition Map

Four ownership changes shape the 2026 buying landscape. Dates verified against public filings and announcements:

  • First Advantage acquired Sterling Check. Announced February 2024, closed October 31, 2024. Currently in the 12–24 month post-close window through late 2026. Sterling and Sterling Volunteers remain active brands.
  • Accurate Background acquired Orange Tree. June 2024. Expanded Accurate's mid-market footprint.
  • HireRight acquired ClearChecks. April 2025. Targeted at strengthening HireRight's backgroundchecks.com SMB platform — this is an SMB-segment acquisition, not a regulated-industry mid-market move.
  • Checkr acquired GoodHire. Closed April 2022. Four years post-close in 2026; combined service model has settled and GoodHire continues to operate as a self-serve SMB product within Checkr.

What to ask any vendor that has changed hands recently: who owns you today, what specifically changed for clients of your size after the close, and what is in the contract to protect against pricing or service changes during the integration window.

The five diligence questions to ask any vendor

Apply the same five questions to every shortlisted vendor — including Bchex. The full PDF walks through what a great answer sounds like and what a dodge sounds like for each.

1. Are you PBSA-accredited?

The Professional Background Screeners Association audits member companies on data quality, compliance standards, and operational infrastructure. A great answer is a yes with the year of accreditation and a willingness to share the most recent audit summary. A dodge is "we're working toward it," especially from a vendor that has been saying so for multiple years.

2. What is your turnaround distribution — not your average?

A great answer publishes the percentile breakdown: how many checks complete in under 6 hours, under 24 hours, under 48 hours, and where the long tail sits. A dodge cites a single "average" number, because averages obscure the tail risk that actually affects a hiring timeline.

3. Do you measure applicant satisfaction, and what is it?

A great answer publishes a number and the methodology behind it. A dodge talks about the user experience without ever putting a measurement next to it.

4. Who owns you, and what changed for clients of our size after your most recent acquisition?

A great answer is specific: pricing held, AM continuity, the integration roadmap, what the contract protects. A dodge is general reassurances about "continuity."

5. What does your guarantee actually cover — and what are the exclusions?

A great answer reads the exclusions out loud. A dodge keeps the conversation on the headline guarantee without naming what is not in scope.

The full PDF treatment includes example great-answer and dodge phrasings for each question, plus the five vendor-drift signals to watch for after you sign. Download the report.

Frequently asked questions

Which background screening companies are PBSA-accredited?+
Among major providers in 2026: Bchex, First Advantage, HireRight, Sterling, Accurate Background, Verified First, GoodHire, and Checkr are all PBSA-accredited. Not every provider in the market carries accreditation — always ask specifically and verify against the current PBSA member directory.
How has the First Advantage acquisition of Sterling Check affected the buying landscape?+
The acquisition closed October 31, 2024, with integration progressing through 2025 and 2026. Historical patterns in the background screening industry suggest mid-market clients often see pricing reviews and support restructuring during the 12–24 month post-close window. Sterling and Sterling Volunteers remain active brands. Current Sterling mid-market clients should pressure-test renewal conversations in 2026–2027 — specifically on pricing and dedicated support continuity.
What should I expect to pay for background checks in 2026?+
Pricing varies widely by check type, volume, and vendor. Basic county criminal checks typically range $15–$50 per search. Comprehensive packages including education, employment, and MVR verification run roughly $50–$150 per candidate. Enterprise pricing is custom-negotiated and often includes implementation fees. Ask every vendor for published pricing, volume discount tiers, and whether they offer a price match guarantee against other PBSA-accredited providers.
How does Checkr compare to Bchex?+
Checkr is optimized for API-first gig economy platforms and high-volume marketplaces. Bchex is optimized for mid-market employers, youth-serving organizations, K-12 districts, and volunteer programs. The buying decision comes down to volume and developer integration (where Checkr wins) versus service model and vertical fit for mid-market and youth-serving buyers (where Bchex fits).
Which vendors are built for non-platform employers?+
Checkr is the benchmark at the very top of the gig-economy volume curve — API-first integration, fast turnaround at gig-scale throughput. The credible alternatives depend on the use case: Bchex for mid-market, K-12, youth-serving organizations, and for platforms that want API-driven screening with senior account ownership and pricing stability rather than gig-scale developer ergonomics; Bchex SmallBiz for under-50-employee small businesses with occasional hiring; Verified First for mid-market employers prioritizing ATS integration breadth; Accurate Background for multi-vertical mid-to-large employers; GoodHire (acquired by Checkr in April 2022) for small businesses wanting a polished self-serve interface.
Which vendors are built for the mid-market segment?+
The three enterprise providers — HireRight, Sterling (now under First Advantage), and First Advantage — were built for Fortune 500 complexity. Mid-market employers (50–2,500 employees) often report feeling deprioritized when they're a small client on an enterprise platform. The credible mid-market alternatives are Bchex (whose primary segment is mid-market and youth-serving organizations, with 75% of searches completing under 12 hours), Verified First (98% client satisfaction, under-30-second average support response), and Asurint (20-hour average turnaround on criminal packages with strong transportation and staffing focus).
Do I need a provider with global coverage?+
Only if you actually screen employees who live and work outside the US. Screening a US-based employee who previously lived in another country — an international history search for a domestic resident — is different from screening an employee who lives and works overseas. Most domestic providers handle the former. Only a handful — First Advantage, HireRight, Sterling — are built for the latter. Don't pay the global premium if your screening is effectively domestic.
How long should a background check take in 2026?+
Industry averages run 2–5 days for comprehensive checks. Best-in-class providers are now publishing distributions rather than averages. Bchex publishes 70%+ of searches complete in under six hours and 85% within twenty-four. Ask any vendor for the distribution, not the average — averages mask the tail risk that actually impacts your hiring timeline.
What's the difference between a database check and a county check?+
Database checks search aggregated criminal record databases — fast, but often incomplete or outdated. County-level checks go directly to the courthouse where records are held. Accurate, complete background checks combine both, with county-level verification of anything surfaced by the database. Relying on database-only checks is the most common compliance mistake small businesses make.

How to actually choose

Before signing with any vendor — including us — work through this order:

  1. Filter by PBSA accreditation. A reasonable floor for credible providers.
  2. Eliminate category misfit. If you're mid-market, cross off the Fortune 500-focused providers. If you're a K-12 district, cross off the gig-economy platforms. If you're global, cross off domestic-only providers.
  3. Check ownership and acquisition status. Vendors that have changed hands in the last eighteen months carry real service-drift risk.
  4. Ask for the turnaround distribution. Not the average.
  5. Pressure-test with the five questions. Get the full list and example answers in the 2026 Industry Report.
