4 Reasons To Rule Out Working With a Background Check Company

Learn four key reasons to rule out working with a background check company and how choosing the wrong provider can impact accuracy, compliance, and risk.

A background check provider can be a valuable partner to any organization that needs to screen employees or volunteers. However, not all companies have the experience to deliver the quality you need and expect. It pays to do your research when finding a screening partner. Here are four reasons to eliminate some background check companies from your shortlist.

1. Poor Customer Reviews

Don’t just take the company's word that it’ll deliver quality service. Check out what current and past clients have to say. Most reputable background check companies will post customer reviews on their websites. Searching for consistently low ratings and negative feedback before signing up with them might alert you to red flags and save you from headaches later on.

2. Lack of Transparency

Whether you’re reviewing a company’s website or talking with a member of its sales team, they should give you all the details on pricing packages, court fees, technologies, and the types of information they collect. If they’re not forthcoming about costs or can’t answer all of your questions, then move on. It’s a red flag if a provider tries to pressure you into signing a contract when you still don’t completely understand what you’re paying for.

3. Low Better Business Bureau Rating

Think of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as an intermediary between businesses and consumers. The BBB collects and shares company information to build trust and empower consumers in their decision-making.

BBB ratings range from F (the lowest) to A+ (the highest). A low rating reflects consumers’ complaints about a business’s services, products, or practices. More specifically, factors like the number of complaints, a company’s typical responses to poor feedback, and its ability to resolve issues influence the rating. Consider a low BBB rating another significant red flag.

4. Not Enough Experience With Your Industry

The organizations turning to background check companies all have different needs that reflect their industries. For example, a hospital and an outdoor recreational center usually won’t have identical requirements when screening applicants for employment. No matter what kind of organization you’re running, you deserve to work with a background check provider that understands the nuances of your industry and can retrieve the information you require.

When talking with a prospective background check company, ask them if they serve clients similar to you. Ask for case studies and testimonials, and make sure the company is familiar with best practices and the latest trends and technology in your field. If it can’t show a proven track record with other organizations in your sector, it’s best to cross them off your list.

Overall, it’s up to you to research and learn everything you can about the background check companies you’re considering.
